Looks like Maurice has some previous charges to contend with also. Me thinks this youngster will be studying at the "college of hard knocks" from here on out.
I also sense a disturbance in the Force, as if the parents will cry out and claim it the schools fault. Anybody want to bet me on this one? Glen Ellyn teen accused of throwing assistant principal to the ground "Deck the halls..." |

Disturbing isn't it? It is frightening what happens when kid doesn't get help early on.
I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world. |

Glenbard South houses the district's ED program (kids with emotional/behavioral issues). I don't know if this student was part of that program but I'd suspect it's quite likely.
Did you read the comments to the article on the Herald site? Wow! People sure do jump to all kinds of racial and socioeconomic conclusions with no such information! Um, Amy gotta call you out on this, but without much information you're assuming he's in the district's ED program. All I know is he assualted a teacher (his second assault charge by the way) and has committed retail theft. I don't care if he's in this program or not, unless he's severally retarded or psychotic, he knows assault is wrong. My thoughts go out to the teacher who was assaulted and the kids who had to witness this behavior. Kids should be able to go to school expecting to be safe. Maurice has used up his goodwill with society and if I'm the judge, he would be getting the maximum penalty allowed under law. "Deck the halls..." |

You can call me out Yoss. I just know that the ED program is housed there. I also know that kids without an ED diagnosis ALMOST NEVER assault teachers. But that's fine.
I agree that he should be severely punished. "The most valuable things in life are not measured in monetary terms. glellyn, what do you mean by that - South of Roosevelt....like those things couldn't happen on our side of town? Hardly.

Well, if you read the comments on the Daily Herald site there are some not-so-nice references to the "rich" Glen Ellyn kids and then another person comments that "those kids" are on the other side of town and go to West. Lots of nasty talk all around. Sad.

Dear Amy: This issue as existed since the 60's. Most, if not all, the "greasers" as we called them came from North Ave. they were generally less afluent, blue collar, and a pretty rough crowd. As I said before I know, a couple were my friends! One of them is now an Indy 500 winning crew chief!
They wore black pointed shoes (points), black pants, and white wife beater t-shirts. Hair was slicked back and some drove hot rods if they could scrape up the funds. A throw back to the 50's really. Sort of like the "Pharoas" street grang in American Graffiti. However, the toughs are today are a lot more dangerous. Drugs, weapons, etc. BTW, did you see in the School Weekly that almost 10% of all GW students don't graduate??? Only 88% graduate from GE??? Incredible to me. The lowest graduation rate of any DuPage High School. |

Gus - Your friends didn't happen to be named Ponyboy or Sodapop, by any chance?
Seriously though, I would like to take a moment to focus on the positive - this month's Glen Bard lists the names and colleges of choice for the graduating West seniors. Way to go students and good job parents! |

I guess I was simply trying to point out that there is lots of negative talk about "the other guy" and it's really uncalled for. Truly, every town has its issues and perks. Same with every school. As for the graduation rate, part of me says not to put too much credence in it. Lots of schools find ways to report their numbers that can make it look like they have fewer dropouts. I suspect that the Glenbard District follows the proper process - making it seem higher than others.

Get real glellyn. Snobbery will get you nowhere. There is very little difference, in a socio-economic sense, with the northside vs. southside. Property values are almost identical, school test scores are nearly identical (and sometimes better on the southside). Get a life. This message has been edited. Last edited by: GlenEllynRing, |

Amy- A dropout is a dropout, right? How can those numbers be manipulated? If other schools really do that, I just don't get it. Cheating is pathetic, especially when it involves so called professionals.

Seriously.... I was joking. I've heard SOR references in the Starbucks line and thought it was humorous. By the way, I have a friend who is SOR... he's a good guy! |

The term "graduation rate" is specifically defined by the ISBE using a formula that takes into consideration the number of high school graduates in a given year and the freshmen enrollment four years earlier. The numbers are simply record keeping. Students may end up with a diploma by completing a course over the summer or in the fall. There is also a good-sized English Language Learners program at West. It is more difficult to graduate in four years, if you enter high school with little or limited English skills. Also consider that there are students with disabilities who are unable to complete high school in four years. |

I agree. I shouldn't have phrased my previous post to infer that this would be done intentionally.....School Counselors have discussed this for years. An example of a way to have inaccurate numbers: A student stops showing up for school, attempts are made to contact the home. If protocol is followed, police might go to the home to enforce the truancy code. If there is no response or knowledge of what happens to the kid, they might not get reported as a dropout. Another example: Student doesn't return to the school in the fall. No information is provided to the school concerning the student's whearabouts. This is most common with students who have a long history of moving from school to school. Again, they might not get reported as a dropout. I'm not necessarily saying that any school would purposefully under-report dropouts but depending on the circumstances, it might be possible that students just "disappear". The really important things are not houses and lands, stocks and bonds, automobiles and real state, but friendships, trust, confidence, empathy, mercy, love and faith. " -Bertrand Russell V. Delong |
