Well, ask yourself what is important to you and the welfare of your loved ones and you will have the start of what could be valued higher and what could be lower. Crime? health? education? environment? food? homeless? defense? transportation? addiction? or say Tiger Woods compensation for golf.

from salary.com: Physician - Family Practice 25th%ile $142,000 Median $160,000 75th%ile $188,242 (4 years of college, 4 years of med. 1 year intern, 3 years of fam. practise residency.) 12 years of COLLEGE Compare THAT to what the D87 adminstrators/teachers make. with bennies: superintendent is prob. over 230K. (AND, like the previous guy 5 years ago who was run out of town on a rail...will probably be eligible for pensions in at least 2 states.) and only 61% of HS students in our district get passing grades on the ACT??? our D87 socio-economic issues aren't THAT bad.

There are four million teachers in this country there is only one Tiger Woods.

So your point is that Tiger is four million times better than the average teacher? I'd rather watch a teacher play golf than have Mr. Woods teaching fifth grade.

The Parade section of the Trib listed incomes of various professions. Most intriging was the income of a sports odds maker. Salary was $400,000. Nice! The average teacher puts in a 10 hour day on average. More if the teacher has extracurricular duties. For that a teacher MAY get a modest stipend. Tenure? Only guarantees the teacher will be notified before termination. Many tenured teachers have been issued pink slips lately. Critics of teachers say we( the taxpayers )pay their salary. The critics forget that teachers are also taxpayers. School Districts work within a budget JUST like private corporations. School teachers don't have the time to post on a bulletin board or blog site. Many here blog from their workplace. Would their supervisors approve?

I have no idea what "a person's value" means, but could you propose a better way of valuing a person's contribution to other people? I say "other people" because I also don't know what "contribution to society" means. I can't figure out what your point is about selling children.

What JRB said in his first post. Word for word, that was my experience. (We even moved here in 1994, as well, and boy, did I hear the whole "Glen Ellyn has the BEST school system!" I even heard how the individual elementary schools were supposedly ranked, with Ben Franklin supposedly being the best one. I have no idea how or why that rumor got started.) Anyway - we are not New Trier, never have been, never will be. No one should ever come here thinking they are getting that kind of school district. Once you realize that, though, you will relax. Your kids will get in good schools - without you having to resort to outside tutoring, despite what some will tell you. At the end of the day, we have a decent school system, and that was brought home to me recently after emailing a cousin of mine who lives in Tennessee. Her son wants to study what my son is in college, and she was asking what courses were the best kind of prep. The courses I mentioned - which are still standard at GBW - were foreign to her. They simply were not offered at her very small, very rural high school. When you venture out from the rarified air of the Chicago suburbs, you realize how good you really have it, despite the grumblings. You just have to get over the fact that Glen Ellyn is what it is, and always has been - a good, safe place to raise an average-to-above-average child. Which is, despite what most parents start out thinking, what most of our kids are going to end up, anyway.

My point about celebrities like Tiger making multi-millions every year is their "value" to society is based on the fact that we are so screwed up that you paste that nike swoosh on him with his goofy grinning face and we buy the product (because after all the customers are the ones paying him through what they pay for the shoes- not nike) So people in this country actually believe that somehow Nike's products, due to Tiger's personae, are better than it's competitors and we are willing to heap the mucho $ on him for the "privilege" of owning a Nike (or whatever endorsed) product. Most celebrities provide our society with nothing but entertainment. I remember when companies were thankful if you requested a shirt or hat with their logo on it and gave it away for free. How did we get to the point where we pay these companies to be walking advertisements?

Unnecessary, repetitive and redundant quote removed. --Ted E. Hi, Wow. Bio - I agree with you too! And Gus, when you say "with the exception of 2" do you mean D41 or D87? Or in all likelihood, perhaps both? Just remember Gus, TWO does not a majority make. In order for any of the reforms to happen on a local level, there would need to be a majority who agree. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Ted E.,
