I checked Power School the other day and found that the high school (Glenbard East) is reporting the emergency day on 8/24 due to the storm/power outage as an absence for my student.???

Is this legal? The students had no choice...the school was closed due to no power after the storm on 8/23. I heard they are doing the same thing for the fire at South...students are dinged with an absence. Is this how they handled the fire at West or was it logged as an emergency and had to be made up at the end of the year???? As I recall West students were not marked absent and had no make up days. Why is the district treating these emergencies differently??????

boy, this powerschool sure changes things...tough on the students if the parents are checking up...tough on the teachers who have to be accountable for what the kids are doing...tough on the administrators since you wouldnt have noticed that absence until the report card, if then.
but overall, just GREAT for parents!

for those who dont have a d87 student...last jan. or so the district started using this computer program, powerschool. parents are given a password and id, and can check their child's progress online in each class, including homework and test/quiz scores. there is a nice feature which allows you to instantly email a teacher. we were told at parent's night the the teachers are to be inputting at least every 2 weeks. some of my kid's teachers seem to update almost daily.
an invaluable tool! and no excuses from the kids.....

i would start by calling the east attendance office, and if you dont get satisfaction there go to the appropriate dean, all the way up..

Powerschool is a tricky thing. My school has used it for years now. Thing is, they have to change something in their enrollment dates, system-wide to fix the attendance problem. I'm not sure how all that technical stuff is done though I'm sure it can be done. Likely, they have to get their tech support person to write some programming language so it won't count on the student's records. I wouldn't get worked up about it. Give them a few weeks to try and work it out. It's likely they know there is a problem but you could always call attendance at East and just ask if they are aware of the problem...that might sound less like you are mad and more like you just want to make sure they know...then, you can ask if they have any idea how and when the problem will be resolved.

That's my 2 cents, My2Cents! Smile

tricky is a good word for it though...while i'm liking the concept these first few weeks of school i can see the possibilities for problems...however, if you have a homework-adverse kid (how do you like that one!) it's a godsend. one of my older kids came home with a D at the semester...she had NO idea that was coming, and no word from the teacher (and she's a good student so the parental watchdog was not on duty) ...at least that is unlikely with power school.

Word up...from Bob McBride-Principal...the state has not told them whether or not they have to make up the emergency day???? why even mark it as an absence on each record...the kids didn't have a choice...the school was closed.

Will all the teachers and administrative/clerical employees be taking a sick day???? I've never heard of this before.

P.S. Hey Howdy...seems to be contagious that adverse homework thing...how do you treat yours? Seems the grounding thing only punishes mom and dad.

Adverse or averse? Adverse is usually used before an abstract noun such as circumstance or conditions when these are unfavorable or likely to cause difficulties. Averse describes people who are disinclined to do something or have a strong dislike that is specified by the word that follows i.e. He was averse to flattery - exceptions include use in a made up hyphenated adjective on local bulletin boards! Cited mostly from Microsoft Encarta Dictionary Wink

M2C, if you really want to get their attention, turn off their cell phone if they have one. This puts today's kid in shock.
