Okay - I missed the forensic parents meeting - Do you think my freshman can still join this year? I think he'd be very good at it.

i'm not sure. you'd have to email coach crowley. my guess would be yes. one note, they currently have a team of 94 -- amazing show of student interest/desire. very inclusionary group of smart, dedicated students/competitors. your daughter would do well just to hang with this type of kids. mine kids sure did.

Anyone who wants to chat about Forensics is OK by me. Anybody here compete in high school or college?

<faint sound of crickets>

ok, so just me then.

Did anybody see "Best of Show?". I laughed so hard during that movie, because that's what it's like to be passionate about speech/forensics. Just as in the movie, it has the intensity of a dog show, it's fiercely competitive, people work very hard at it, there are micro celebrities on the circuit, and most importantly...

If you talk about the details of competition with civilians, they'll look at you like you are bat$#it crazy.

Teams are just forming now. Some of the kids have material they worked on at one of the summer camps. Some kids tried out, or are being cut in September. The total number of kids competing has very much to do with how many stipend coaches the school budgets for. I heard Downers South has 10 coaches on stipend, but I don't know for sure. I've been on staffs of 5 before, and we kept around 75 kids on the team, including novice and varsity speakers.

perhaps D87 should think about MORE funding for this activity....i don't know if the team is cutting this year, but this can be one of those life-changing activities which makes a student do things (good things!) they never thought they could do...football is no cut, and forensics should be too! don't forget the forensics program was on the "hit list" of a few years ago...

pretty sure it's a no-cut activity. and i agree, they should get more $$. maybe they will if they rank higher i state this year. it'll be hard to ignore their success then. the biggest problem is the activity is not spectator-friendly, so it's not a profit-maker for the school.

OK, ok, I admit it. I was on Speech Team. We weren't civilized enough to call it "Forensics". That sounds too CSI. I did prose and oratorical declamation, and did pretty well in prose. It was fun, although my parents didn't like shuttling me to school to catch the 6:00am bus to wherever we were competing. We were a tight group. The drama kids / speech kids / newspaper / yearbook / honors kids were usually the same crew, but this let us hang out with kids from different class years. The original comedy kids were always the coolest...

GW takes third at last saturday's novice-only meet in homewood flossmoor . looks like we have a pretty strong novice squad, boding well for future varsity teams.

the 2007-2008 season's full competitions, including varsity and novices, begin next week at downers grove north.

go GW!

Thanks for posting these scores. It is nice to be able to follow some of the kids I know. That freshman is really doing well, but she has always been impressive even as a small child!

just a reminder that GW is hosting a forensics tourney this saturday. it's a perfect opportunity to see these talented kids perform. please note, these are all-day events, consisting of two or three preliminary rounds followed by a finals round. the competition starts around 9:00 and finals start around 3-4:00.

i'd send you to a link to a information page on GW's web site, but, unfortunately, can't find one.

Forensics = Speech Team.
