Got a call from Glenbard West and this from the Glenbard West website:

Dear Glenbard West Parents/Guardians:

On Thursday, May 8, threatening graffiti was discovered on a fence surrounding dumpsters on campus. The graffiti stated a non-specific threat of violence. School officials investigated the situation immediately, and we are enacting preventative safety measures in cooperation with the Glen Ellyn Police Department.

This communication is to make you aware of the situation and inform you of the safeguards that will take place.

The following safety precautions will be in effect for Friday, May 9:
• There will be an increased police presence on and around campus.
• Building security will be enhanced.
• Building staff has been asked to have a greater presence in the hallways.
• Student entry into the building will only be allowed through doors 1 (Main
Entrance/Circle Drive) and 3 (Cafeteria Ramp).
• As is current practice, anyone arriving to the building after 7:35 a.m. must
enter through door 1.

In order to ensure that accurate information is being distributed, I have communicated this news to our communities in the following ways:
• This letter was distributed to all students who are in attendance today.
• This letter is being mailed home to every Glenbard West parent.
• I sent an automated phone call to every Glenbard West parent to inform them of our situation.
• This letter is posted on our website http://www.glenbardwesths.org.
• A press release was sent to our local newspapers.

We need to come together as a community of students, parents and school personnel to end this disruption of student learning. I urge you to talk to your children now and impress upon them the seriousness of threats in today’s society. Ask them to notify you or school personnel should they hear of any planned or potential disruptive behavior.

Although there was no direct threat, we feel these safety precautions are necessary to maintain a peaceful and safe learning environment. Your child’s safety is always our number one priority. Parents who have questions regarding these safeguards are asked to call me at 630-469-8600 Ext. 2202.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jane Thorsen
Principal, Glenbard West

We got the same call.

I for one am happy that they did not choose to cancel classes...that would only add to the number of times this happens. In college I remember fire alarms and bomb threats every finals week. The graffiti artiste just wanted the day off.

Just dropped my son off at West - definitely an increased police presence there. Saw three cars in front of the school, and two policemen up on Circle Drive, at the entrance. Also many teachers/faculty out and about. There were some of those temporary no parking by police order signs on the side streets near school, too.

So they're obviously taking this somewhat seriously.
