Just the other day my wife and I were commenting on what excellent educations our kids received at West. Yes, I am a frequent critic of what I perceive as waste in the district, but IMO&E if you are the parent of a reasonably intelligent and reasonably dedicated kid, you are definitely getting your money's worth out of West.
I really question what NCLB is supposed to be testing. How many resources we are supposed to pour into, and how much we are supposed to rejigger the curriculum, to achieve measurable improvement by the least capable special education kids?
It is really not fair to compare the Glenbards based on NCLB since the demographics are so completely different. The school on the south side of Glen Ellyn basically has no sub-groups. If you analyze the data it is the sub-groups who are pulling down the scores. One of my children is currently attending a prestigious University and received her high school education at a Glenbard most of you would never consider sending your child to - she is currently getting straight A's and went in as a sophomore due to the 8 AP Tests she passed, all with a score of 5. She was remarkably well prepared for college, much more than many of her peers in college who attended expensive Prep Schools.
Apples to apples - I'll put West's motivated honors students up against any other like minded student. Not all the students - and they all must take the test - prepare or even care about the PSAE/ACT and the score. If you have those students in your population, the school's score would suffer, but not an individual student's.
