COD isn't in their backyards...if it was they would be opposed. Go figure, move next to a high school...expect kids, noise, lights, etc... This is all about that it is near their homes.
Stealing signs is as idiotic as putting the signs up to begin with. Everyone's first reaction is to express their views on a sign. Tit for tat...in my opinion.
First, you know nothing about whether I support athletics or not. Second, everyone can enjoy a laugh here and there, except of course people like you who take this bulletin board thing way, way too seriously : ) Third, if my child ever stole anything they would be in such trouble - you have NO idea how strict I am.
A laugh, a joke, a little comment...it's all humor, you should try it out.
We do support the community in the COD battles and were there to support the neighbors at the Village meeting. The COD President and D87 have a lot in common.
I don't necessarily laugh at the tax bill, but I do laugh at those that constantly whine about it.
Do we all not think we are paying a premium to live in a town like GE? For all it's faults, there really are only a few (relatively) of these "jewels" in the suburbs. If the property tax weren't high, this town would just be Glendale Heights or Bloomingdale. You get what you pay for...
I have a friend who is in the Oswego school district. His house is appraised at 350k. He pays around 10k for property taxes. I think GE is dwon right cheap compared to that.

Glellyn never said that property taxes has or has not kept pace with inflation.
He/She merely pointed out that yes there is a cost to living in a town like Glen Ellyn. And yes I know people who live in Oswego and they pay far higher property taxes than we do for living in a far less desirable community than Glen Ellyn.
Governor Quinn who correctly rose income taxes did not promise any property tax relief. Republican governors did claim that if they were allowed to raise income taxes then they would offer property tax relief but they never pushed the issue.
It was the Republicans who lied to you. Not the Democrats. We never promised any form of property tax relief.

I am relatively new to GE, so have been somewhat surprised at how devisive the community is when it comes to any sort of change. And all is declared through sinage. Signs over keeping out a new preschool in the neighborhood, signs to say "no" to field lights at the high school. Signs, signs, everywhere signs.
I would love lights at the field. It opens up options to keep the kids in town - not going to other fields and venues. It allows familes to walk together at night to community events. It also keeps people in town, dining at the restaurants and spending money here. I have seen 3 restaurants close in the year I have been here. Why wouldn't we do things as a community to encourage people to stay and spend here?
Does anyone see a happy meeting place? I heard a compromise to turn the lights off by 9. Would that be such a bad thing?
Queenie, what about allowing the rental of the field with no restrictions? The potential is there to rent that field out and keep it in operation every night. I am all for hs usage but not happy to host a mini stadium in the neighborhood.
Well, I do like the idea of club and community sports being able to use the field, not just the High School. And it seems that renting it to them offsets the costs that seem to be a concern to most. I am not talking about semi-pro teams coming in from other cities and trashing the town and stadium - but park district and Glen Ellyn community sports could really use the extra space. I personally would love to be able to walk to the venue as opposed to driving to Village Green and using that really horrible field in the back for lacrosse and soccer games, while a pristine, gorgeous field sits in in the middle of town. I just see lights at the field as adding to the town, not taking away from it. More opportunity to play, more people frequenting downtown businesses, greater safety with well lit areas.
It seems like the main concerns can be addressed and compromise can be reached - lights off at 9, limit number of days during the week it can be used, keep it within the community for use etc.
I think I am more surprised at how devisive the issue is in town - show which "side" you are on - as opposed to how can we make this work best for all. Like I said, I am new to the town and just now learning about the GE culture and this division seems, sadly, to be a big part of it.

I too have shared Queenie views. And based on discussions in the neighborhood, its a mixed bag. Honestly though, there seems to be no acknowledgement that wanting lights is not a crazy out there desire. I believe they are the only high school in the Chicago area that does not have them. I have seen zero sympathy to that fact.
But lets face even if the lights were free, the anti-light people would not care. The bottom line is they don't want lights. Most of the other arguments to me are just noise. If the lights are that bad for quality of life then they should shut them off at South and not use them.
I would respect the anti-lights group much more if they stuck with the main argument. And I agree that there appears to be no opportunity for middle ground.
And that doesn't mean that I don't have issues with how money is handled in 87, I just have a problem with the tone of the anti-light group.
Ha . . . that field in the back of Village Green is beyond awful. Simply depressing. Total POS. And it is too small for lacrosse.
Being new to town, how the hell did you ever come across that dump?
Baseball, basketball and football get all the dough the park district has to dole out. I find it reckless that they endorse that artery hardening pastime of baseball while relegating lacrosse to the third tier sports bin. Wait until our children drop dead on the diamonds from lack of activity and boredom . . . then we will turn our backs on baseball. Just a matter of time.
