from the D87 website:
"Glenbard District 87 Superintendent Mike Meissen invites parents and other community members to join him at this month’s Superintendent’s Citizens Communication Forum.

The January forum will be an open discussion in a question and answer format. The Superintendent’s Citizens Communication Forum will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Glenbard North High School, 990 N. Kuhn Road in Carol Stream.

The event is being held in conjunction with Glenbard North’s 8th grade family night; however, community members from throughout Glenbard District 87 are encouraged to attend.

The Superintendent’s Citizens Communication Forums are aligned with Glenbard District 87’s strategic plan priority to strengthen productive home, school, and community partnerships for education. Glenbard is focused on improving two-way parent and community communication systems to ensure needs and requirements are clearly understood, addressed, and responded to in a timely way. Glenbard wants to engage all facets of the community to facilitate progress toward achieving the school district’s shared vision.

Please join us on Jan. 20 and learn more about Glenbard District 87. Take advantage of this great opportunity for a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Meissen."

If you are concerned about the unhappy direction the curriculum is taking PLEASE come next Wednesday.

Please note that this will take place on North's 8th grade family night. Your West questions will be irrelevant to the audience.

Also, does someone actually learn how to write this gobbledygook? I thought legal scholars were verbose, but this is ridiculous.

this is not just a West matter, since contemp. world history HONORS is taught at South, East, and West.
only North offers AP Euro ONLY for sophomores.
i'm assuming that the Q and A is separate from 8th grade night, which at West is usually a big open house for the academic departments held in the field house.
as for gobbledygook...

We used to share visions in the 70's. Mostly at parties

Lmao, RMK....

Howdy, I wouldn't count on them being seperated. More than likely, the Q&A session will be AFTER the 8th grade parent tours and whatnot.

Howdy's point in trying to get people to come is to MAKE SURE the West questions are relevant to much of the audience. Whether it's about this particular course or any other issue that is only at West.

I would honestly be more interested in the logic and support (if any) behind the "One Glenbard" curriculum....

Well, so far, Meissen is NOT listening, because "one curriculum, one Glenbard" is still full steam ahead. What's sad is that he doesn't seem to listen to anyone, not parents, not teachers, not even his own administrtors.

you know, this "one glenbard" is really crap. there is no way the diploma earned by an all honors/AP student is worth the same as, well your basic Jeff Spicoli.
is there?

"The board-directed initiative came as scores for several minority groups remain well below average in the district."
Is this really a board-directed initiative??

The article states that this is aimed at decreasing an "achievement gap"....really? By increasing the difference between "regular" classes and AP? Without the honors stepping-stone, there is an increased gap between AP and regular courses....how do they figure that this will close an achievement gap?

"Meissen said, however, that the move would not eliminate any other honors classes and that the AP classes would substitute." Seriously?? You cannot "substitute" an honors course with AP....there has been nothing but support for the incredible difference between these two levels, so how could it be a substitute? I've always been under the impression that substitutes were comparable....not on a completely different level, wth is this guy thinking??

"As parents grilled Meissen for more than 80 minutes" 80 minutes! Bravo!!!! Great job, guys!

"a meeting sometime in February would take into account experts in several areas." Nevermind the kids themselves....or their parents, right? *shakes head*

"We don't want to push them to the point that they break." Then stop trying, Meissen. Ugh!

Thanks for posting this, Shrugged Smile

The Herald article shows once again how stubborn Meissen is. We underestimate our students?? He doesn't want to see kids at a breaking point?? Those are the same phrases he repeats about this issue. He never sheds any new light.

I wonder if he knows how rigorous AP classes are. He's forgotten that students can't switch to less rigorous courses if AP is too hard. Meissen is going to ram this change through, no matter how hard parents work for the opposite goal. Once he has his mind made up, he doesn't change it, no matter what. (I wonder if he ever even took an AP course in high school.)

Farmer, I never took an AP course in high school because I KNEW I couldn't handle the rigor! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the commitment and dedication that these courses require.

He's going to push this through and the only ones who're going to suffer are the kids. This is going to affect not only those AP student, not only those honors students, but even the *gasp* average student (yes, believe it or not, they DO exist here). This is pure insanity. If my kids were at this level, I would honestly consider moving to a district that cares about its students....not just its test scores (if they even exist anymore). I can only hope that this guy will no longer be superintendent when my children reach this age.
