Some of the mailings we've received lately lists the Assistant Principal for Athletics as TBD. The West web site lists one of the Deans of Students, Linda Oberg, in that position. What happened to last year's AD? Is Linda Oberg the permanent replacement, or an interim AD?

Oh Fan, don't get me started....athletics are a HUGE expense for high schools. I don't know how GBW is structured but at my school the Asst Principal who assists the AD only does that part time and then teaches a few classes and coordinates all student activities (eligiblity, semester reports, approval of events, flyers, and more). BUT high school athletics are really expensive.

Are there plans afoot to swath York Duke Stadium with artificial turf? I noticed the new windscreens the other day. My guess is that the turf is next.

That's their name for the Athletic Director. As far as I know, it's a full-time job, like most high schools.

Dude gets to ride around campus in a golf cart...or did they shitcan that? If not, once it becomes clear that the cart is part of the deal...you can triple that number.

Clam, I don't know about the turf. I hadn't heard anything but I also haven't been around for those kinds of conversations this year. I'll see if I can find out. I hate turf but apparently everyone is trying to go with that stuff. And Fan, I will say that yes, AD's make alot but they also have no life. They are at the school for almost every single athletic event and often for the entire event....meaning almost every evening and Saturday they are at the school in addition to being at school all day. It is a lot of money though...

Last year's AD left after just one year...maybe not a bad thing. I believe when he took the job last summer the best thing he could say about it in the paper was that GW was so much closer to his home than his former school (Oak Park). Naming the new AD has been a bit contentious from what I've heard. There was at least one insider who seemed very capable and perfect for the job (former football coach, volleyball coach at both St.Francis and GW, physical education teacher and last year was Assistant AD), and thought he had it. Then, who should be named but Linda Oberg, formerly of the Dean of Students office but totally lacking in any athletics background at all. Possibly a political thing, possibly Dr. Thorsen thinks she's put in her time in the Dean's office and deserves to be moved out. It'll be interesting to see what she makes of the job.
