Hey! I know it's wAAAY more fun to make drinks than bake cookies, but share the love folks. DON'T ANY OF YOU PEOPLE HAVE A DECENT RECIPE FOR THOSE POLISH COOKIES CALLED 'COLATCHKIES', kolachtkes, oh whatever...you know what I mean. I can't spell it but hopefully I can bake it. Need to make them by Thanksgiving for a Polish/Bohemian guest. Help!

I do...but it starts and ends with driving to Berwyn.

Are there a lot of Polish bakeries in Berwyn?

There was a time when Berwyn and Cicero had a bar and bakery every couple of streets. I haven't been back lately so I'm not sure what's left. DId go to Freddie's during the summer for Italian ice and pizza. Caputo's has pretty good kolachkes. I'd try some of those before making a trip.

Take the 22sd street tour. You hit all the Bakeries in Berwyn in the morning. All the Hot Dog/Beef stands in Cicero in the afternoon and all the tavens/gin mills in both towns at night. The last part will take much longer than the other two! Roll Eyes

I'm sure I've seen kolacky somewhere - either Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. I'm always tempted to buy them but have to remind myself that they are full of butter and my kids won't eat them! Maybe it was Jewel. I know I've seen them around here.

I just found this easy recipe on a web-site: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/cream-cheese-kolacky/detail.aspx

Can I have my thread back?

I believe there is another thread for food recipes that might be more appropriate for this.

This sounds disgusting...but the color is right and I insist that you serve them to your guests.

When is that party, anyway?

You're right, it doesn't look good. The website looks like it might have some good ideas.

How about this one? I've had them and their pretty good (if you like Cosmos, you'll like these). Don't mind the fact that they're one of Oprah's favorites:

No way that you can serve that, Yoss. No way. Christmas should be an innocent time filled with sugar plum fairies and family...especially if some of your family members are sugar plum fairies. Christmas should not be about hanging with the devil or drinking the devil's concoctions.

For a non-religious person, you're worried about the devil?

I just saw this on a Food Network special and it sounded really good!

Red Rooster

1 1/2 quarts cranberry juice cocktail
1 (6-ounce) can frozen orange juice concentrate, defrosted
2 cups vodka
Combine all of the ingredients in a large plastic container. Freeze for several hours. It will not freeze solid, but rather achieve the consistency of a slushy.
Scoop into punch cups or wine glasses and serve.

However, if I were coming to your party, I would prefer a nice Cab. After all it is red. festive, and I know how many I can drink and still get home safely.

One of my friends just made this one (for her daughter's first birthday party. Who says it has to be all milk and juice boxes?) and I plan on trying it for my holiday Girls' Night. Although since I don't own a punch bowl, it might just be in the soup tureen. Or the bathtub.

One 750 ml bottle Finlandia Cranberry Fusion Vodka, chilled

1/2 cup cranberry-flavored mixer, such as
Rose's Cocktail Infusions Cranberry Twist mix, chilled

6 cups cranberry-raspberry juice, chilled

3 cups fresh orange juice, chilled

Juice of 1 lemon

1 orange, thinly sliced

8 ounces fresh or frozen raspberries

1 bottle sparkling wine, chilled

In a punch bowl, combine the vodka, cranberry-flavored mixer, cranberry-raspberry juice, orange juice and lemon juice. Float the orange slices on top. To serve, place a few raspberries in a wineglass, fill the glass halfway with the cranberry punch and top with sparkling wine.

My favorite cocktail for summer or the holidays:

Bourbon Slush
INGREDIENTS:
2 tea bags
1 cup boiling water
1 cup sugar
3 1/2 cups water
1 (6 ounce) can orange juice concentrate, thawed
1/2 cup bourbon
1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed, (1/2 of 6 ounce can)
PREPARATION:
Steep tea bags in the boiling water for 3 minutes; remove tea bags and stir in sugar. Add remaining ingredients; mix well until sugar is dissolved. Pour into freezer containers and freeze until firm. Remove from the freezer about 10 minutes before serving.

I always mix it up a bit and put it into drinking glasses - not served in a dish. YUMMY!
