GW played a great game. I don't think most people expected them to be in it to win it, but they were until the last minute. They played their hearts out and they should be very proud of a great season and a fantastic post-season.

Go Hitters!

I totally agree. It was a great game. It was a beautiful day on Lake Ellyn. Does Morgan Park play WWS next?

They weren't just "in it." They should have won it. Why they attempt to kick that field goal is beyond me however. Why not try to get a first down on 3rd down instead of setting up the kick...then why not just run it on 4th giving Morgan Park a 90 yeard field with 1 minute left and no timeouts if they don't convert the 4th down?

It's a shame that it came down to that.

GBW flat out outplayed the faster, stronger Morgan Park team.

Morgan Park does play WWS. My neighbor, a WWS alum, is very excited.

It was a great game. Where was the GBW band? A game like that deserved to have the home teams band playing.....Field goal attempt, what a momentum changer...

The band was at a competition in Indianapolis and got back just as the game was ending. Too bad, too! It would have been fun to have them there. Hope the band did well. Does anybody know if they did?

A shame? Please. It's a game. Nobody died. Nobody lost their job. If they outplayed Morgan Park, they should be proud. Their parents are proud of them, and to second guess coaches of teenage boys is a little over the top. Especially after their efforts this season.

hooo haaa, we got us a coach!

anyone can armchair coach a devastating loss like this (they always come out of the woodwork). but to be truthful, NOBODY expected our boys to dominate morgan park like they did today. what a fantastic job those hitters did. i'll bet even the morgan park players would agree to that. after being thwarted by our defense for most of the game, the fact that MP could muster a set of plays like they did in the last two minutes was as unexpected as GW being up by two TDs for most of the game. . . but that's football for you.

thanks for an exciting season, men. and good luck to all you graduating seniors. i hope you remember fondly for the rest of your lives, these days of playing on the banks of scenic lake ellyn.

Calm down gramps.... they're just talking about a football game in the context of sports. Nobody has made the jump to sombody dying or losing a job (except you, of course).

Glad you and your other couple of buddies are here to be the "Board Police" though.

Yes, a shame. Those boys had their win snatched from them. Are we proud of them...yes....but they certainly deserved better. And since when are we, Ronkas, above questioning the decisions of others. You know, others who are paid to make decisions. The play calling sucked...I've said the same of Zook...my mancrush...it doesn't make it inflammatory...it just makes it my opinion.

JRP - Coach Hetlet and the rest of the coaching staff want your work address so they can come over and critique your job performance Monday. Wink Let's see - last year 1-8 this year a tough loss to a very athletic team in the second round of the playoffs. That's a lot of progress. It will be interesting to see how WWS does against Morgan Park - with WWS down in 7A this year - their coaches were taking copious notes during the game.

My job performance gets critiqued every day. And I've been on all sides of the critique spectrum. Expecially when coaching sports, it just comes with the territory.

That being said, I don't wish to take anything away from the players at all...they fought with all their hearts. And to the coaches credit, they had those boys ready to play and stayed with a pretty good gameplan. However, the play calling at the end of the game didn't sit well...but then again, one must merely sit in the stands for 4 seconds to see that everyone has a better play to run than the coaches on the field. Smile...that's probably a little bit of the allure of being a fan.

I'm going to bow out of this topic because I feel it might (has taken) take a turn for the worse. I merely posted it to see what the thoughts of others were. Those whom I was at the game with, are apparently in the minority.

Now, since I saw my first full GBWest game, I have to go see this John Shurna kid play hoops.

Second guessing on-field decisions is what sports are all about.

Unfortunately, JR, you sound like the classic GW "fan". A team gets interesting enough that you feel that it's finally time to go see a game, then feel that you can critique it rather than appreciate it for the major accomplishment that it was. Had you seen any of the last few years' games under the old coach you would see that while the make up of the current group is virtually unchanged, EVERYTHING else is different. My son graduated last year and I so wish that he could have been a part of Hetlut's positive, upbeat approach.

Definitely go see Johnny and the rest of the GW boys play basketball this year...too bad you didn't go to any of last season's games though. What a fantastic season it was. Hopefuly Johnny will get the team support he needs to shine like he did last year.

I remember at last year's final game of the season watching a particularly disturbing scene. The seniors came over to the stands to sing the fight song and the crowd was cheering for them and clapping. One old duffer in the crowd, who I understand never misses a game, yelled, "They're 1-8. What are you clapping for?" Young men are honoring their school, crying because it's probably the last time they'll play organized football and singing their hearts out to their loyal fans (mostly parents who have been there through thick and thin) and this jerk is yelling that kind of crap. It was a shame.

So let me get this straight. We are all up in arms over JRPotts questioning a play call...made by a high school football coach? You've got to be kidding me. What in the world is sports all about? Or at the very least the discussion of sports. How could sports magazines and newspaper sports sections exist if there were no discussing the outcomes of games, plays, performances? Are we to just walk away from a game, a match, a race and not discuss what happened....good or bad? Nothing in his posts seemed all that overly insensitive to me. He rightfully praised the kids for their hard work and dedication. All he asked is what probably half of the fans sitting in the stadium were wondering. What the hell is wrong with that?

For the record...everyone...and I mean everyone is proud of what those kids did yesterday. Period. That doesn't mean questions can't be asked...win or lose. I congratulate Coach Hetlet and his team for a season well, well done. But for crying out loud. If a guy has skin so thin that he can't face a little Monday morning quarterbacking, he isn't going to far in this profession. Coaches are like ducks if they are smart...let the water roll off your back. Next thing you're going to tell me is that Coach Hetlet actually did contact JRPotts and called him out. I mean, c'mon. That's ridiculous. Potts is everyone's Buddy...and I choose to stand up for his right to ask questions.

been gone a long time and quite frankly, after many of my comments thought I'd be banned from this site.

Check the record books....how many Chicago Public School League teams have advanced to the semi-finals, let alone, ...the finals in Illinois high school football play-offs?

You probably have to go back to when Daley's kids, (the old man) were playing.

Thank their luck stars that GBW was seeded in that group.

It was a fun season, the kids played hard, they had....(most importantly, fun) but
at the end of the day, who won or lost doesn't matter, as well as game management by the coaches.

I'll put it in perspective.

Next week, WWS will romp and have their second stringers in by the third quarter.

The coach at WWS will have to call off the dogs.

Cause I decided I like Ted. for all of the abuse, hate mail and anguish he put up with, he continued to take the high road. He managed it with class and whether or not a person agrees, or disagrees with his rules, you have to respect him.

I probably won't come back because I don't have much to contribute. It's still fun to read though!!
