Clamato: My friend. In this trying time for me and my family, your support means everything. Everything. You are a great American and even a greater Hilltopper. Long live Clamato! Thanks you!
Originally posted by Clamato: So let me get this straight. We are all up in arms over JRPotts questioning a play call...made by a high school football coach? You've got to be kidding me. What in the world is sports all about? Or at the very least the discussion of sports. How could sports magazines and newspaper sports sections exist if there were no discussing the outcomes of games, plays, performances? Are we to just walk away from a game, a match, a race and not discuss what happened....good or bad? Nothing in his posts seemed all that overly insensitive to me. He rightfully praised the kids for their hard work and dedication. All he asked is what probably half of the fans sitting in the stadium were wondering. What the hell is wrong with that?
For the record...everyone...and I mean everyone is proud of what those kids did yesterday. Period. That doesn't mean questions can't be asked...win or lose. I congratulate Coach Hetlet and his team for a season well, well done. But for crying out loud. If a guy has skin so thin that he can't face a little Monday morning quarterbacking, he isn't going to far in this profession. Coaches are like ducks if they are smart...let the water roll off your back. Next thing you're going to tell me is that Coach Hetlet actually did contact JRPotts and called him out. I mean, c'mon. That's ridiculous. Potts is everyone's Buddy...and I choose to stand up for his right to ask questions.
Well said, except for the "to far" part. You are still my heroine. That "raps" it up for me.
I am a dyslexic agnostic insomniac. I lay awake at night wondering if there is a dog.
Coach Starkey and Coach Hetlet have to be on cloud nine. Starkey reignited a Raider program that first suffered from being placed in a conference with schools twice its size and then being mismanaged for many years. His team's only losses were to larger schools who made the playoffs or the state's number one team. And he's taught the kids (and their peers who are fans) to be fine, productive people. Wow.
Hetlet continued his headcoaching playoff streak and motivated his team to overachieve. Like at South, the coach brought people back into the football stands in Glen Ellyn. Not only can he celebrate a psychological victory for his program yesterday, he has a son that is less than a week old. Nirvana...
As for commentary on one's job performance, these guys must eat it up, either way. They have hundreds of devoted followers giving them tips to make them better at their jobs. Reminds me of those cell phone commericals with the "network" people behind the caller...They certainly must view this as a positive.
In the past six years, village taxes have been raised three times and lowered three. There were few if any comments at any of the public meetings either way. These guys coach football games and their decisions are discussed for hours and days. They must both energized and proud, as the public cares a lot about what they do. The community really seems to have rallied behind them. And sure, criticism is part of that. But its awesome!

to be clear, hilltopper-clam was mowing his lawn for most of the first half. he certainly is a man who has his priorities straight. . . or at least his bent grass straight.

how's the hip, clammy?
I will call that out as being a fabrication. Clamato has exactly 542 blades of grass on that island of green he calls a yard. There is no way it would take him "most of the first half" to mow that yard - unless, he was using shears.
i have multiple witnesses. you also have to factor in the precision leaf blower action and spic & span cleanup process. he was in his i-will-arrive-late-and-look-nonplussed mode. truly classic clam.
i say this after he tried to save my sorry a$$ in doubles today. two dives by the man to boot. god love him.
Originally posted by littlegoesalongway: I remember at last year's final game of the season watching a particularly disturbing scene. The seniors came over to the stands to sing the fight song and the crowd was cheering for them and clapping. One old duffer in the crowd, who I understand never misses a game, yelled, "They're 1-8. What are you clapping for?" Young men are honoring their school, crying because it's probably the last time they'll play organized football and singing their hearts out to their loyal fans (mostly parents who have been there through thick and thin) and this jerk is yelling that kind of crap. It was a shame.
I think the old duffer you are refering to is the same one who was constantly negative all through the 1984 Hilltopper season. The team that year only won the State Championship, so much for his opinion! He is and has been always ignored by the crowd!
I am fairly certain that given a cape and a nice tiara, I could save the world.
Language buffs - Did you know that a "duffer" is defined as an unintelligent person, or incompetent, ineffectual peson? I always thought is was something like "old f**t." Live and learn.
With respect to Saturday's game, you have to like Junior defensive lineman Theo Odom's quote from the Herald: "We got a lot of heart. We'll come back next year more hungry." In summation, he asserts, "They didn't really win. We sort of lost ourselves." The theme of the season was "Restore the Honor" and the boys proudly wore this past week buttons stating: HONOR RESTORED.
Go West!!!

over 95% sure i know of the duffer described earlier. please note that he has crossed over to the great unknown. . . btw, if i am correct, while someone may have heard him barking last year (lots of old men do), this man devoted much of his life to improving and developing GE amateur sports. he was a key originator of the golden eagles organization.
Nope, not the same guy, T.A. Hats Helmets off to BP. My son had a sticker on his Golden Eagles helmet last year in his honor. That having been said, yelling at people who want to cheer crosses the line, no matter who you are. "Hey, you kids, get out of my stands!"
Theo Odom (the Daily Herald spelled it wrong, "Odum")comes from a long line of Hitters. I'm thrilled that he'll be around next year to continue what was started this year. I can't wait for my own son to get to Varsity.
I think the uproar over an otherwise innocent comment about a sporting event comes from the fact that there wasn't even time to celebrate how far the team has come in one short year before something negative was put out there.
I'm a great armchair quarterback, too. I understand the need to think you know more than the coach. It's one fun part of organized sports. The problem with it is that we weren't at practice with these kids all week to see what they're really good at doing. We don't spend part of the week scouting the opposition and watching films of our games and theirs. We think we know more than we really do.
It's o.k. to think things and even to know things. It's just not always prudent to state them to a bunch of people that you don't really know. I've learned that my own self. Tough lesson, but a very valuable one.
