Here's an article about a talented girl who walked away from a basketball scholarship at UConn. The next Candace Parker

What do athletic parents think about when they read this?

I tell my son all the time that it doesn't pay to peak too early. I say let the kid lead the way in their degree of commitment....interesting story.

Maybe multiple sports is still the best way to go.

I know of many kids that have gone from travel baseball into travel football into travel basketball with no weekends off.

When does this stop???

I suppose it stops when the kid doesn't want to do it any longer. I am certain their are situations where the parent(s) are forcing/over encouraging their kids to over-perform, but I will bet that that is the exception rather than the rule. Granted, there are probably plenty of kids out there w/o the cajones to step up to dad...but I am confident that if a kid doesn't want to continue, he/she won't. If not...they'll be doormats for life.

When my kid wanted to step away from baseball forever...I asked him one time if he was certain. He said yes, I quietly celebrated inside my head, and we never looked back. Parents...a word to the wise...never let your kids play a sport that doesn't involve a time clock.

I believe I read somewhere that this girl is now playing DIII volleyball...she was clearly totally done with basketball and hopefully her parents are supporting her decision (by paying tuition at the new school!)
