Is GE still doing one? How about Lombard? I know wheaton and elmhurst do....

Anyone know of any in the area? The guys in the Jeep club are interested and I am trying to get some of these on our club event calendar.

TIA

GE stopped doing it because it actually brought people downtown.

It was nice and tame compared to others - but still something to do downtown. I thought I heard the downtown businesses did not like the noise and crowd.

Wheatons is great and we walked around 3 or 4 times last year. They close off the streets, grab some ice cream and let the kids dance to some old rock and roll. it is fun.

I love going to Wheaton's car nights, nothing better on a warm Friday night.

This may come as a shock to GE business owners, but while were there for car night, we actually go to restaurants and shops and BUY things! I'm going to go out on a limb and say we are probably the rule, not the exception. IMO-Most of the downtown GE business's are just vanity shops whose bored owners have money to waste. I invite counter arguements to my theory-please. Otherwise I cannot phantom the logic of limited hours of operation and stores that offer items that the average person might buy once a year, if that.

I guessing car night could become a profit center for the village, just have officer Ricky put in some OT and ticket cars that are parked over 2 hours, including the show vehicles.

I really used to love downtown Glen Ellyn...especially Thursday evenings when the shops stayed open later for those of us who worked all day. It's a shame that Glen Ellyn is stagnant and refuses to move forward with the surrounding burbs. How can the village administration be so blind to progress...seems they're going backwards when canceling things that draw crowds.

One of the business owners I know complained that the car owners brought coolers and chairs and took up parking spaces for paying customers.I don't know if they all feel this way but there doesn't seem to be a lot happening downtown anyway. Batavia's is one block over from the main drag and in a really nice spot next to the river.The town brings out street barricades and the police park a couple squads there to block a couple side streets.I guess their Board feels the Cruise Night has some benefits .

The car night in Lombard on Saturday evenings is nice as well. I think it starts after Memorial Day.

The retailers did indeed complain. You may recall that the show was originally held in the municipal lot across from McChesney & Miller. The C.O.C. (I believe they sponsored the shows) decided to move it to Main St. between Penn and Crescent. With the possible exception of the tool on the corner of Main and Crescent that played oldies all night (my all-time least favorite kind of music...I tried to have Dick Biondi killed several times*), seemed like harmless fun. But you're right, the retailers did complain quite a bit. Heard it myself from a few that I know. Can't understand the thinking.

I was watching the effeminate Vince Gerasole last night on CBS 2...the station where the African-American anchor was done wrong by the white contractor...and he did a little segment on Libertyville's downtown. I must say that it looked stunning. The restuarants looked cool...their Firkin was just a weeeeeeee bit different than ours and their town square was impressive. We looked at a house up there when we were moving from Evanston in the early 90's. Decided Lake County taxes were too high. We young and stupid. We're no longer young.

* didn't really

Our Jeep club toyed with the idea of approaching a few towns to float the idea of sponsoring a Cruise night series this year. Somehow Glen Ellyn was not on our short list. Smile

LMAO-I'm with you, I cannot take 50's music anymore and it tends to stir my homicidal urges to take out the guy playing them. Most cars in these shows are from the 60's & 70's, can we at least push the music into the same era as the cars!

Don't get it with the store owners complaining-maybe their slackers who hate to expend any energy ringing up a sale. I'm certain they didn't put a lot of thought/effort into their business plan.
