Our price range would be significantly lower than that one for $1.5 mil. But it is a nice house. I saw a cute house in the low 300's on Diamond Lake in MI. I have never been to this lake, and don't know a thing about it. But the house looked cute and "cottagey" and was in a price range that seemed reasonable. I could picture myself having girls' weekends up there, drinking wine on that pier and loving life! But seriously, my hope is that after he attends the boat show, my husband will be over the whole boat idea, and we can just go back to taking vacations instead of owning either a boat or a cottage. It does sound like a LOT of WORK.

Dins, you are right, the cost is probably the same overall, if not cheaper just to travel & stay at hotels. Do any of you own time shares? When we were in Vail they tried to sell us one. Have any of you had good or bad experiences with time share ownership? If so, which companies? I don't know much about them, but I suspect they come with significant restrictions.

Nice house....for $1.5MM? My guess is that the value is in the property. Never heard of Cass Lake...which doesn't mean much in the greater scheme of things...but it must be a bigshot area. The CL Chamber has a crappy website, though. My $1.5MM would be scootin' up to Harbor Country. Something close to the big lake....Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert...1.5 hours from GE...and some good coffee at The Whistle Stop. Personal preference...to each his own.

With regard to cost...we looked at houses/cottages about 10-12 years ago in Union Pier...very briefly thinking we should buy a tiny place up there. Didn't do it as I am the worst investor ever...and I couldn't fix a one-horse race so I'd be writing checks all the time. Well...those places seem to be going for about 3 times what we were looking at. Another brilliant move on my part.

Looks like it's about 250 miles north of St. Paul, Mn. That's about 700 miles north of here. On the plus side it has really low taxes @ 2954/Yr.

It's at least in the right direction, I've never been a fan of trying to cross the Illinois/Indiana border at any time of the day or night.

For 1.5 you can still easily buy on Lake Geneva, and maybe I'm a little biased, but is there any lake that comes close?

Lake Michigan. On the Michigan side. Like being at the ocean.

For $1.5MM...you could probably buy the entire town of Lawton, MI...and they may throw in Schoolcraft as a bonus.

Buy the house on Geneva Lake and with the change get a 60 foot cruiser for Lake Michigan.

Smile

You can still sup in St. Joe's, but now you can avoid the traffic.

Clam, I am familiar with both of those towns and would not call either one a bonus.

St. Joe is too much like being in Evanston. When I leave the city....I want to leave the city (yet still get Intelligensia coffee)...which means I'd prefer to leave the CBT/CME people behind, as well.

Diamond Lake is a VERY nice lake in Cassapolis, MI right on M60. I haven't looked there in a long time, but I can't believe you could buy anything on the water for 300K there. If you do buy it, then casa del Fish will be only a 10 minute drive away. We could hang out!

Schoolcraft has some great antique shops! I have no personal knowledge of this, just second hand from Fishette.

You could get the best of both worlds. Sell your GE casa and buy something in Ogden Dunes/Dune Acres area of Indiana. For less than $700K you can get a darned nice place in Ogden Dunes that is walking distance to both the lake and the commuter train to Chicago.

I'll agree that the town of Lake Geneva is nothing revolutionary, nor Williams Bay, Fontana or Linn Township for that matter. I find Chuck's to be the most comfortable place on land, but of course nothing beats the spring fed, glacier-cut Geneva Lake itself, or the convenience. (Yes, like Beemer/Bimmer it's the town of Lake Geneva on Geneva Lake.)

And besides, it's the most appropriate place for your Streblow, they just look so at home there.

Shh!

Only drawback I can see is the increased distance from my golfing buddies.
Of course, I guess it could just mean splitting the difference for several more rounds at Harborside...

And Clam would be welcom any time he wanted to take his cutlery for a nice long drive...

I believe she was talking about Lawton and Schoolcraft....in the State of Michigan.

The town of Lake Geneva has a lot of fudge stores. Lawton does not.

Lake Geneva , Check out Abbey Springs Condo's. Not cheap but they do all the maintenance. Living on Lake Mich. is nice but it's not as great as you might think. Go to Little or Big Bay DeNoc in the UP for Lake Mich. Property reasonably Roll Eyes priced. This is not the only area that property has gone crazy the last few years, especially Lake Front property. Most older cottages on lakes are being torn down to make way for big vacation homes. Sound familiar?
I'm sure it's the same throughout Wisc.and Mich. How about it Fish.
BTW. Cass Lake is one of Minn. best vacation spots.

Jombl - I finally took a look at the Streblow photo. What a gorgeous boat. I am sure my hubby has nothing like that in mind. Besides, no room for the kids!
I'd expect to see Dean Martin pull up to the pier on one of those, martini in hand. Smile
