The question I have is: what should I pick for a 16 year old? It has to have the right art mixture with danger/violence/. Even comedy. It can't just be the clown college movies that he and his friends can see.

My recent Hadley grad and I just finished watching Gran Torino, so I asked him what he thought of your question. For the past year, I've tried to expose him to older movies "off the teen beaten path" including Amadeus, Fargo, The Wall, Citizen Kane, Ed Wood, Cinema Paradiso, JFK, Schindler's List, Immortal Beloved, The Green Mile, American History X, Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Platoon, Godfathers 1-3. (Glen Ellyn Library is a great place for these).

If the measure is movies not already seen with his friends, that will resonate and Dad can enjoy too: Fight Club, The Big Lebowski, Goodfellas (or Casino).

I feel the same way about GF III as I do Caddyshack II.....it doesn't exist in my mind.

How about a Tarantino marathon?...Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, True Romance.

If you want to actually teach your son something about having a good relationship with a female-type-person:
When Harry Met Sally

If you want a good foreign film that demonstrates how people in the world are really more alike than different (plus, it's just rich in color and texture):
Monsoon Wedding

Other just plain good movies:
Shawshank Redemption
Schindler's List
A River Runs Through It
Forest Gump

You did Ferris, so you'd best do Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club if he hasn't seen them already.

For quality danger/violence, I'd go Blade Runner or LA Confidential (not a huge fan of The Usual Suspects but I know a lot of guys love it), if you feel you're 16 year old is up to all the content in those (but judging by your list of already seen it, you'll have no problem there). And I can't not watch Band of Brothers whenever it pops up during surfing.

Other milder suggestions for pure entertainment: Get Shorty, The Bourne Trilogy, the Hunt for Red October.

If you're going AFI top 100 on him, there's plenty of suggestions there. For age 16 I'd pick out of the following if he hasn't seen them: Lawerence of Arabia, Psycho, Apocalypse Now, Unforgiven (although its best to have seen all the Clint Spaghetti westerns before seeing this), MASH, the French Connection, and In the Heat of the Night.

Others that just came to me from the 70s/80s that the kids don't see nowadays: Carlito's Way, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, and an almost comical early Sean Penn movie - Bad Boys.

Our friend Sully quit the gang, but then joined up with some unsavory mercs. His career went down hill when he met Matrix.

If you want him to know how scared you were when you were 16, then show him Red Dawn.

Ron, Why if he is a 16 old boy are you not bringing him to THG for a couple of beers instead of seeing namby pamby movies. Man up will ya? Take him deer hunting or something. Maybe a backyard fire pit, beers and a lighting farts contest? Take him to Bitterboys for a meat smoking demo, anything but lounging around for a week in front of the tube!!!!

If you need a swap for levity in the same genre as Platoon,

How about this?

My personal favorite with the same star
Has R Lee Earmy, too.
