Rented "Christmas with the Kranks" last weekend and man is that a bad movie. Really bad plot, poor acting(I felt sorry for Jaime Lee Curtis)and characters that drifted in and out for no other reason than to collect a pay check.
You want a good holiday movie-National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Cousin Eddie is classic.
Trivia question-What happened to Eddie when he had the metal plate in his head and "Catherine fired up the microwave"?
I just got done watching ELF, IMO a recent movie that will go down as a classic.
I watched the Charlie Brown Christmas last night with the kids. It was followed up by a bunch of Snoopy character vignettes. You know you are in trouble when your 7 year old asks "Why are the voices different?" and "Why don't they look the same?" and "Who is Rerun?" (and I don't mean "Hey Hey Shirle" Rerun) The classic episode was fine, but the added stuff, which seemed to be about 20 years newer, was pretty horrible.
The Frosty Returns movie is pretty heavyhanded and screams out to be salted, melted and evaporated for eternity.

There is a great reason why A Wonderful Life is left off that list. I hate it. Sorry, I just don't care for it. Never have understood why so many people hold it so dear to their hearts.

I like the Santa Clause and Home Alone (not really a Christmas movie, but plotted around the holiday). All time favorite still remains Christmas Vacation and Elf...They are classics! I am a White Christmas sentimentalist also!

Went to Blockbuster last weekend to rent Elf since I heard it was a must-see, but alas, I found they now only rent DVDs. Since apparently I'm the only one left on the planet who doesn't have a DVD player, I was SOL. Now that DVD players are now down to, what, a couple of bucks or so, I guess it's time to purchase one.
On an unrelated note, does anyone else miss GE Fan's literary nuggets yet? Come back GE Fan!
He'll be back...he went to a friends wedding remember? He's leaving Thursday, so probably took the day off of work to pack and spend time with the family.

If you still want to see it and have a library card, the GE library lists that they own the video recording of the movie. I think that you can even place a hold on it via the on-line system. That may or may not help, thought I'd mention it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the library before I pony up for a DVD player. And by "a couple of bucks," I actually did mean $2 (tongue-in-cheek), not $200. Since I couldn't rent the Elf video, I bought a pre-viewed video of "Anchorman." I'd rather have violent diarrhea than watch that again. Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to enjoy it.
Don't like It's a Wonderful Life?? What's wrong with you? Donna Reed is a flat out babe. And the "To my brother George, the richest man in town" line always wets the eyes.
Other favorites - "Holiday Inn" if only because you just won't see a good Blackface routine on TV anywhere else. Hahahahahah. Just kidding. I'm sure youngin's like MountainDew would be surprised to know that "True Dat'!" isn't a hip hop thang.
A Christmas Story is easily the best holiday movie in the last thirty years. Hell, I'm 32 and it makes me nostalgic for the 1940s. Rudolph of course is great. The Grinch. Charlie Brown of course, but it lacks something without ubiquitous Dolly Madison ads. Ummmmm.....Dolly Madison crumbcakes......
Oh, and the Davey and Goliath Christmas special rocks.
FWIW, The wife likes While You Were Sleeping. I could take it or leave it.
