I'm not as cultured as RMK - but this play got fantastic reviews so my wife and I went.
The play was really well done - in terms of staging, costumes, acting, music, and all. I guess we just didn't really care for the play. Pretty grindingly depressing (until the very end - and AFTER several of the main characters die). Quite long as well.
I was glad to see the Drury Lane putting something on besides yet another revival of Damn Yankees or Guys and Dolls. But Ragtime sure didn't float our boats.
My mother-in-law has season tix to Drury Lane. She took my Freshman lax queen to see it on the first weekend. Before the 4 star reviews came out. The poor baby had to give up time with the girlfriends to go with Granny. She was not pleased.
Came home from the play saying it was one of the best she has ever seen and she was so glad she went. She has already seen Rent, Les Mis, 42nd Street, Miss Saigon, Wicked, etc.

Haven't seen this, but I know the music; it's gorgeous. But yes, the book by E.L. Doctorow, on which this is based, is a bit dark. But amazing and realistic and a must read.
